Vie Romee
The "Vie Romee" are a series of six itineraries that wind through the Florentine countryside, thanks to a project of the Cassa di Risparmio of Florence in collaboration with the organizations involved by the routes. The itineraries were defined following a careful historical analysis of the territory, which allowed the identification of the segments of greatest interest travelled by medieval pilgrims moving around Florence in the direction of Rome, Jerusalem and Compostela, and that led to the master pilgrimage road, the Via Francigena. The idea is to reinterpret the medieval phenomenon according to a philosophy of slow and sustainable tourism, giving the tourist the opportunity to retrace the pilgrim roads whether by foot, by bicycle or on horseback, having modern technological tools at their disposal: maps and routes that can be directly downloaded from the website onto a GPS or satellite navigator, or onto certain cellphone models. The Circondario Empolese Valdelsa is part of the "Via Pisana" itinerary, which represented, for medieval Florence, an eminently commercial artery, but was also used by numerous pilgrims who were headed to the port of Pisa (and later, the port of Livorno) in order to set sail for Santiago di Compostela. The itinerary was designed to rejoin the āFrancigena Nova" in the lower Valdelsa. ITINERARY From Florence (S. Frediano Gate), seven stages to arrive in Siena, and while in the Empolese Valdelsa passing the municipalities of Montelupo, Empoli, Castelfiorentino and Certaldo. To see the stages and/or download the routes directly from the site www.vieromee.it .
